Sometimes people do things for us and we just don’t appreciate how much they’ve sacrificed to “make it happen.” In this, my second blog, I want to pay tribute to my daughter Katy. She is our sixth and last child.
I remember being told that I was going to be a Father for the sixth time. I was shocked, frustrated, worried, humbled, excited and thankful. Not all at once. No, it was more like waves of emotion that swept over me each time the thought of being the Father of another child entered my thoughts.
When Katy entered our lives, my employer (my best friend at the time) had terminated my position with the company. Actually, it was his Father that fired me, but that’s another story.
This is about Katy. Every Father can relate to what I’m about to say. Katy and I were close until she was about 7 or 8 years old. Then, as if by magic, we weren’t close. Years past. Due to circumstances, I wasn’t in Katy’s life as much as I should have been. Time marched on.
The turning point and worse point for us was when my wife and I had given Katy a computer for Christmas. Seemingly harmless, it was well received. It came to be cursed by Mother who felt she was spending far too much time on AOL than she should. We, that is none of understood that this single act would have such a profound influence on one person.
Katy took to computers “like a duck to water.” She learned and learned more. She found graphics and her reative side. She found love (online) and found that she has a real talent for making computers meaningful in peoples lives. The process has taken years. A few years ago, life between Katy and me was at its lowest point. We simply didn’t speak. We felt, each of us, misunderstood and frustrated. Enter Katy’s life partner, Joanne Castro. Katy was so afraid and scared that she asked her partner to sit down and talk with us.
Our hearts melted, time passed and slowly we began to know Katy for who she really is as not only a child of God but our child. Katy had found herself and we had found Katy. The added benefit was that we now have a new daughter in Joanne and we couldn’t be more pleased. They now have a daughter whose name is Zadey Jade Rawson-Castro. Zadey is our seventh grandchild. She is wonderful and beautiful.
Katy put more than 40 hours of her time in to work with me in the creation of this blog. We had lots of false starts, my poor choice of colors, style, content etc. In the end, the site as you see it emerged.
I would like you to know that I love Katy very much. Oh, and the primary reason Katy and I had such a difficult time getting to know, appreciate and really love one another was simpler than you might imagine. . . Katy’s personality and drive is just like mine. Who knew?
Katy, thank you for your love, devotion and the chances you give me to work with you in so many ways. I love you.
