Change – Will it work for you?

June 12, 2015 by DR Rawson Leave a Comment

When should you make a change?  Should it be at age 30, 40, 50 or late in your 60s perhaps even older?

There are so many people that need to make a change in their life.  Are you one of them?  Today, I’m featuring the well known author and speaker, Robert Kyosaki.

Years ago I taught marketing at the college level.  I was also fortunate enough to speak to students in high schools, colleges and universities on that very subject.  Why marketing?  If you’re going to work for someone else, then sales and marketing (in many cases) will give you a salary and commission.  This is an opportunity to tie your financial position directly to your efforts.  However, you’re still working for others.  If you’re an independent salesperson representing a company in the marketplace, then your commission only income is tied to your personal efforts.

Back then (when I was teaching in college), sales was a given.  Everyone understood, no sales, no income.  Marketing was new (I know, I just dated myself) and people were wondering what’s the difference.  Sales is where the rubber meets the road.  The salesperson speaks directly with the decision maker.   Marketing has more to do with the analytics of the marketplace so that the salespeople that work for them can more easily identify and target their prospects.

At that time, I taught that Network  (a.k.a Multi-level or MLN) Marketing was the best way to go.  Back then, the biggest and most well known company was Amway.  Today, people that built their Amway business many years ago are still receiving the benefits.  While their efforts have long since diminished, the income has steadily increased because of the people they brought into their business.

Everyone talks about the money that artists like Garth Brooks, Maroon 5 or even Michael Jackson make.  They create and sing one song and it generates income every time someone buys it.  Actors and actresses make money every time their image or voice is seen or heard. There are other examples of a recurring revenue (a.k.a. residual) stream.   What’s so special about those people vs. you?  You may not sing, but you know people.  You may not act but you know people.  You may not write but you know people.  People just like you.

Network Marketing is built on two very solid principles.   [Read more…]

Corporate Giving – The Charitable Component of Profit

April 17, 2015 by DR Rawson 1 Comment

HabitatHumanity20152

Perhaps it started with the old testament (Malachi 3:8) or a feeling that you had down in the pit of your stomach that said, “I’m so blessed, I should bless the lives of others.”

A friend named Jeff first brought the idea of corporate giving to my attention.  Jeff’s idea was that every corporation has a responsibility to the community as a whole.  To this end, the company we started in 1999 gave money to Habitat for Humanity so that homes could be built for those in need.

One of the great things that Habitat insists on is that there is NO free lunch.  Yes, they will build you a home but you will help build it and you’ll pay for it so that others can have homes.  The new home owner’s payment will fit your their ability to pay.

The concept of “teach a man to fish” is important. We all feel bad about those in need of food and/or the basic necessities of life.

As a young boy at the age of 10 I found myself homeless along with my younger Brother and two Sisters.  My Mother didn’t have the skills to be anything other than a Mom.  She did her best but the responsibility to provide fell upon me as a the oldest child. [Read more…]

What are the benefits of walking?

June 27, 2014 by DR Rawson Leave a Comment

letswalk

I remember that my Grandfather walked for 10 minutes after every meal.  Not only was he very principled, he was very consistent in the way in which he lived his life.  Walking is just one such example but it does illustrate a few points worth mentioning.

Now that I’m getting older, my health is even more important to me (it should have been all along my life’s journey).  A couple of years ago I began walking at a consistent pace and taking our dog for companionship and exercise (nobody likes a lazy dog . . .wait, that’s not true).  Each year I started and stopped based on lots of different mental excuses.  I learned a long time ago that when you’re looking for an excuse, anyone will do (weather being a possible exception to the excuse rule).  So, I walk everyday, Monday through Friday and give myself the weekends off.

On the weekends I’m usually working alongside my wife around our home.  For me, that ensures that I’m exercising albeit in a different way.

The benefits of walking are amazing.  Prior to walking, my hip bothered me all the time.  I’ve lost weight and viola, my hip no longer hurts.  It also gives my mind a rest while I appreciate nature and the beauty around me.  The best benefit is that I’ve lost 32 pounds from my original weight before I started walking.

As part of my weight loss regimen I joined LoseIt.com to track what I eat (accountability) and what I do (excercise).  I also purchased a Fitbit (www.fitbit.com) Zip that tracks my steps, distance and the calories I’ve burned as a result.  It resets itself at Midnight each day.

Cursor_and_Lose_It__-_Community_ProfileNow, LoseIt has awarded me this badge for achieving my goal weight.  I’m proud of this because of the effort it represents and changes associated with that effort.  I highly recommend using LoseIt if you want to take control (personal accountability) of what you’re eating and what you’re doing to improve your health.

The benefit to me has been enormous.  The benefits to walking may be even better for you.

What are your thoughts?

Traditional Barber

May 2, 2014 by DR Rawson Leave a Comment

MikeEvery so often I need a haircut (actually all of them (that is the few I have left).  The man for the job is “Mike.”  I’m well aware that by blogging about this fantastic experience may make my wait for him a bit longer but he deserves your attention.

My first business (besides two paper routes) was as a shoeshine boy inside my local (La Mirada, CA) barbershop.  I went there every Friday night and Saturday.  In exchange for sweeping all the hair up, they let me shine shoes for $.25 cents a pair.  I usually received a 5 or 10 cent tip.

It was here (and later another barbershop in San Diego, CA) that I learned the difference between a barber and a really great barber.  Mike falls into the latter category.  Why?

First, Mike will ask you what you want and not try to make the decision for you.  Next, he asks about me rather than me having to start a conversation or listening to everything about him.  However, I wanted to learn more about him.  I’ll give you the 411 I have in a bit.  Finally, when the experience is almost done, Mike does something that you rarely (if ever) see anymore.  Mike lathers up the back of your neck and shaves you there to insure you have a crisp clean haircut and leave with a great feeling.  He’s an expert at this and especially the “art” of barbering.

Who is he?  Well, he’s not really from around here.  He moved down here from near the Sacramento, CA area.  In addition to “real” barbering (a tradition in his family) he’s also a musician.  He plays a number of instruments and is a big fan of all types of music including opera.  Confused yet?

As a young man starting out in business a lesson I learned was NEVER judge a book by its cover . . . ever.  Never judge someone by the way they look (today).  Does Mike look like nearly everyone from my generation?  NO.  Mike is . . . well . . . Mike.

If you’re in need of the best haircut at a very reasonable haircut, give Good Fellas Barber Shop a try.  Pope (a wonderful barber herself) and others are barbers you’ll appreciate and like.  You’ll come back, again and again.

If you see Mike, tell him “DR says, HELLO.”
