In 1984 I flew around the world six times. On one of those trips, I was in London three different times. Of those, twice I used a Taxi like the one above.
On the first trip, I arrived at 4 pm. The next morning I was due to fly out again after a brief visit with the British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. So I arrived promptly at the appointed time for fifteen minutes with her. After that, I traveled by British taxi. I left forty-five minutes later and went straight to Heathrow Airport bound for Kuwait.
Two weeks later, I arrived at 4 pm [again]. And again, I had been traveling for days without time to have laundry done. It had been three days since I stayed in a hotel long enough to get my shirts starched, etc.
Once in my room, I put the luggage on the bed and then took the elevator down to the lobby. I went out the side door (always better and faster) and hailed a cab. A few minutes later, we were headed to Saville Row, where I could finally get more clothing.
On the way over, the driver and I hatched a plan to see several major tourist attractions, including a few Castles, in one evening. Initially, he said, "Can't be done." I said, "Here's the way we'll do it. You pull up in front. I'll jump out and stand in front of the attraction. You will take my picture, and I'll get back in your cab, and we'll be off to the next place." He said, "Terrific Mate, that'll be fun!"
It was; I didn't get back to the hotel until past midnight. It was then I realized I paid more than I should have for some excellent English tailoring. "Oh well, let's hope they last," I said in my mind. They did.
It would be thirty-five more years before I had the time to spend in a Taxi. A friend of mine, Dan Burke owns the largest fleet of British Taxis in the United States, here in Henderson, NV. Upon hearing of my twenty-fifth wedding anniversary, he offered to take my wife and me to the 2019 Concours d'Elegance gala that we were both attending in one of his cabs.
We had so much fun. I was General Manager of the event. There were millions of dollars worth of cars at the event. Clearly, we were in the coolest one, a restored British Taxi. Thanks, Dan.
